2017 Spring Practice Preview: Wide Receivers

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Wide Receivers

Written By David Sugarman (@David_Sugarman2)

One play. That’s it. After getting suspended for the season opener vs Florida International one play is what Simmie Cobbs ended up playing after suffering an injury against Ball State that would require season ending ankle surgery. All of a sudden Hoosier quarterback Richard Lagow, in just his second career Division I start, was down his best receiver and looking towards a former walk-on in Mitchell Paige and to Ricky Jones, a big-play threat who had been inconsistent in Big Ten play the year before. A wave of fear washed over the crowd, this is Indiana football’s luck and this is how it’s destined to stay. Like a bully on the playground the injury bug had pushed Indiana to the unforgiving blacktop just as it looked like they were beginning to get back up.

Redshirt Preview: Which Redshirt Freshmen Will Breakout in Spring Practice?

Redshirt Preview: Which Redshirt Freshmen Will Breakout in Spring Practice?

Written By Alex Compton

I’ve often felt that redshirt freshmen are the forgotten members of a football team. Many fans (myself included) read up on high school seniors when they sign with the Indiana Hoosiers and then wait for those players to make an impact on the field. If the recruit ends up redshirting during his first year on campus, it can be difficult to remember him when it comes time to preview the coming football season. What does the player offer? If he came in as an athlete, what position is he going to play after practicing for a full year? How does he fit in on the depth chart? How much progress has there been in his game during his time away from the watchful eyes of fans? With this in mind, I thought it would be beneficial to take a look at each of the guys who redshirted in 2016!

IUFB Projected Two-Deep Heading into Spring Practice

IUFB Projected Two-Deep Heading into Spring Practice

Hoosier Huddle

Spring practice will start on March 4th and we have decided to start the Hoosier Football discussion up a little early. For the first time ever Hoosier Huddle is putting out a projected two-deep. There are a few notes that readers should be aware of.

  1. This is the projected two-deep for the season opener, not a current ranking of where players stand if the season started today. The players used are based on the final roster from 2015, minus the players who have graduated, declared early for the NFL Draft, or who have moved on to the next phase of their lives. In addition we did include the 2017 IU signing class.
  2. We will update this as information on the current roster becomes available.
  3. We encourage discussion and comments about the roster, this is a fluid piece and will be updated at least a couple more times before the opener against Ohio State. We want fans to have fun with it and state their cases for players. There are almost no wrong answers here.
  4. Finally, I want to thank the rest of my Hoosier Huddle staff (T.J. Inman, David Sugarman, and Alex Compton) as well as Matt Weaver from Peegs.com for their input on this. Hopefully, you (the readers) enjoy this as much as we did putting it together.
