Our focus today is on a position group that dramatically improved in their first year in a new scheme and is returning virtually every contributing player from a season ago: the corners.

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Special Teams

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Special Teams

Written By Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

A renewed emphasis will be put on the importance of special teams in 2017, when the Hoosiers start spring Practice on March 4th. The special teams unit was one of the Hoosiers’ bugaboos in 2016 that kept them from taking the next step up from a second consecutive 6-7 season. The Hoosiers struggled in all facets of the forgotten phase of the game. Griffin Oakes was sub-par the on both field goals and kick-offs, Joseph Gedeon wasn’t the difference maker at punter that he may have looked like against FIU, and the return game (both punt and kick) was non-existent.  This spring may serve as a wake-up call for any player that thinks their jobs on a special teams unit is safe.

Hoosier Huddle is getting ready for the first spring practice of the Tom Allen era by previewing each position. Today’s focus is on a position headlined by a returning All-American. Arguably the best player on the squad, Tegray Scales will lead this defense from the middle. He’s surrounded by a group of players hungry to step up and replace the production of the departed Marcus Oliver.

IU drastically improved in their first year under defensive coordinator Tom Allen. Allen is now the head coach and the Hoosiers return the majority of their 2016 defensive production. For the first time in a very long time, there are legitimate expectations surrounding IU’s defense. The play of All-American Tegray Scales is a big reason why. The other linebackers will have a fierce battle throughout spring practice to begin determining who will play beside the senior leader.

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Tight Ends

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Tight Ends

The tight ends at Indiana caught 10 total passes and their usage, or lack there of, drove Hoosier fans insane. The good news is that Tom Allen brought in Mike DeBord whose tight ends caught a combined 45 passes at Tennessee last season. The talent at the position is not the problem. IU will have five good ones entering spring practice and another joining the squad when the freshmen arrive on campus. Could this deep, but under utilized group be the answer to some of IU’s offensive woes that flared in 2016?

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Quarterbacks

When the 2016 season ended in heart breaking fashion at Levi’s Stadium two things where clear about the quarterback situation at Indiana. One, that sideshow wildcat Zander Diamont would not be back for the 2017 season after retiring. Two, starting quarterback Richard Lagow had left the door open for a massive quarterback competition in spring practice with his performance against Utah.

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Wide Receivers

One play. That’s it. After getting suspended for the season opener vs Florida International one play is what Simmie Cobbs ended up playing after suffering an injury against Ball State that would require season ending ankle surgery. All of a sudden Hoosier quarterback Richard Lagow, in just his second career Division I start, was down his best receiver and looking towards a former walk-on in Mitchell Paige and to Ricky Jones, a big-play threat who had been inconsistent in Big Ten play the year before. A wave of fear washed over the crowd, this is Indiana football’s luck and this is how it’s destined to stay. Like a bully on the playground the injury bug had pushed Indiana to the unforgiving blacktop just as it looked like they were beginning to get back up.

Redshirt Preview: Which Redshirt Freshmen Will Breakout in Spring Practice?

Written By Alex Compton

I’ve often felt that redshirt freshmen are the forgotten members of a football team. Many fans (myself included) read up on high school seniors when they sign with the Indiana Hoosiers and then wait for those players to make an impact on the field. If the recruit ends up redshirting during his first year on campus, it can be difficult to remember him when it comes time to preview the coming football season. What does the player offer? If he came in as an athlete, what position is he going to play after practicing for a full year? How does he fit in on the depth chart? How much progress has there been in his game during his time away from the watchful eyes of fans? With this in mind, I thought it would be beneficial to take a look at each of the guys who redshirted in 2016!
