Hoosiers Come Away From Spring Ball Feeling Good About the Fall

Spring football has wrapped up, the pads have been put away until August, and the Hoosier players will focus on summer conditioning workouts. The last four weeks have been encouraging if you are an Indiana football field. We have seen the return of injured quarterback Nate Sudfeld, the resurgence of a beleaguered wide receiver corps, and break out performances from relatively unknown players. So before we head into the sunny skies and warmer weather of the summer months let’s look at the seeds that IU has planted for the fall this spring.

The threat of thunderstorms did little to deter the Hoosiers from getting in valuable reps this morning during the team’s sixth spring practice. Big Ten Football Analysts Howard Griffith and Gerry DiNardo, former Indiana Head Football coach, were in town to get a closer look at the Cream and Crimson. Some the big plays of the day included a great touchdown grab by sophomore receiver J-Shun Harris II and a jarring blow landed by Antonio Allen on a running back that resulted in a fumble which was recovered by the defense.

The pads were popping outside of Memorial Stadium on the IU practice fields as the team got in some more scrimmage work. Both first and second string saw plenty of action, which allowed for some of the younger guys to showcase their skills. For example, the rush defense improved by 55 yards, allowing only 183 yards on the ground per game. This in large part was due to the elevated play of the defensive line. The team got contributions from both upper and underclassmen, alike. However, while they were more disruptive defending the run, they failed to generate an adequate pass rush, getting to the quarterback just 23 times which was tied for 82nd best in the country.

The Move Back to Defense For Chris Covington Should be Good For the Hoosiers

All winter long we have been expecting to see converted linebacker Chris Covington back in the back up quarterback role, but when the position changes were announced this morning it said that Covington will be returning to his original position of linebacker. Indiana Hoosier head coach Kevin Wilson said the move was initiated by Covington because “it’s what he wanted” and that “what’s best for him is best for the team.”
