Sudfeld, Hoosiers Excited to Be Back on the Field For Spring Practice

Sudfeld, Hoosiers Excited to Be Back on the Field For Spring Practice

A new season is here, enough of the talk about who might do what, it is time to put on the pads and buckle up the chinstrap. The Indiana Hoosiers finally hit the field again in Mellencamp Pavilion as they partook in their first of 15 practices this spring. The hope and optimism was palpable as the Hoosiers got back a healthy Nate Sudfeld, which has been the big question looming over IU since October. On Thursday, Sudfeld did not don the yellow non-contact jersey and was a full go in team drills and looked sharp in a practiced that head coach Kevin Wilson called “pretty good”.

Wisconsin Badgers

The Wisconsin Badgers opened Spring Practice (on March 15) for the first time under new head coach Paul Chryst. Chryst is quite familiar with the Wisconsin way of doing things and I don’t expect to see much change in Madison. The Badgers will be working with a new coaching staff (with the exception of returning DC Dave Aranda) and they will be attempting to replace Melvin Gordon in the backfield.

Spring Preview: Running Backs

The B1G’s 2014 season was all about three things: Ohio State’s march to a National Title, wonderfully bad commercials on the B1G Network and the abundance of talent at running back. David Cobb, Akeem Hunt, Ameer Abdullah, Jeremy Langford, Melvin Gordon, Justin Jackson, Ezekiel Elliott and of course, Tevin Coleman, are just some of the names that terrorized B1G defenses. Many of them have moved on and a lot of teams are spending their Spring practices attempting to find guys to fill big holes in the backfield.

Spring Preview: Quarterbacks

Spring Preview: Quarterbacks

Spring practice is just a mere five days away and the biggest question that should be on the minds of Hoosier fans is, how is quarterback Nate Sudfeld going to look coming off of season-ending shoulder surgery in 2014. The 2015 season, and possibly Kevin Wilson’s job, hinges on whether or not Sudfeld can return to form and get IU to their first bowl game since 2007. Whenever a player is coming back from injury it is difficult, almost impossible, to predict what he is going to look like before actually seeing them practice, especially if they will be limited in contact like Sudfeld. However, this is not solely a Nate Sudfeld piece, the Hoosiers have other quarterbacks that need to show improvement in order for this team to reach its goals. IU also returns Chris Covington from injury and Zander Diamont, who started the final six games for the Hoosiers in 2014.

The brackets are out and most everyone is rightfully focused on March Madness. Spring Preview: Offensive Line

Spring Preview: Offensive Line

Written By: Nick Holmes (@HoosierHolmes)

The oft overlooked and unheralded heroes that labor in the trenches, the offensive line is tasked with opening up running lanes and keeping the quarterback upright. They perform their duties in near obscurity, typically only drawing attention to themselves when a play falls apart or if they commit a penalty. During Kevin Wilson’s time in Bloomington the Hoosiers offensive line has been one of the more consistent groups of the team, despite injuries challenging its depth.

Spring Expectations- Tight Ends

While most of Hoosier Nation is either on Spring Break or anxiously waiting for the selection committee to announce their field of 68 teams, Hoosier Huddle is pushing forward with our spring football previews. Next up on the agenda is what should the IU football fans expect to see and what should they want to see out of the tight end position before the Hoosiers break spring camp.

Spring Position Battles: Kickoff Return

Spring Position Battles: Kickoff Return

Welcome to the final installment of Spring Position Battles, we are looking at the often over looked battle at the kick and punt return positions. Middle of the pack teams like the Indiana Hoosiers need every advantage they can get and a lot of the time that comes via very good special teams. Some of IU’s most memorable wins have come because of a kickoff return for a score. Lance Bennett sparked the Hoosiers’ upset of Oregon on the road in 2004 with a long kickoff return touchdown and Marcus Thigpen initiated come backs in 2006 against Illinois and Ball State with big plays on special teams. Under head coach Kevin Wilson the Hoosiers have had their share of explosive special teamers with Shane Wynn and Tevin Coleman, but in 2014 it was an area that was lacking.

Spring Practice Position Battle: Back-up Quarterback

Spring Practice Position Battle: Back-up Quarterback

Welcome to part four of Hoosier Huddle’s coverage of spring football practice! As we enter the last weekend in February and head into what is hopefully a warmer March, we are going to look at the battle to backup starting quarterback Nate Sudfeld. Sudfeld was lost for the season after taking a hit late in the first half of the Hoosiers’ sixth game at Iowa. The injury was the last thing that IU needed to endure, as they did not have a proven commodity in the backup role. So while it is just the backup quarterback battle it can play a huge part in the success that the Hoosiers will have on the field in 2015 as we saw when head coach Kevin Wilson was forced to play true freshman Zander Diamont.
